Creality Filament Dryers Compare: Dry Box 2.0 & SpacePi & Plus & 4X & 4XL

If you've ever dealt with "popping" sounds during a print, stringing that looks like spiderwebs, or brittle filament that snaps at the slightest touch, you know that moisture is the enemy. This is particularly common in the UK, where outdoor humidity typically ranges between 70% and 90%, while indoor humidity is often 40%–70%, according to the UK Met Office . Most 3D printing filaments should ideally be stored below 30% RH, and hygroscopic materials such as Nylon (PA) may require below 15% RH to maintain reliable print quality.

To help keep filament dry in climates like the UK, Creality offers several filament drying solutions , ranging from the Filament Dry Box 2.0 to the high-capacity Creality SpacePi X4L Filament Dryer. With multiple models in the lineup, this guide compares five Creality filament dryers to help you choose the right one for your setup.

Creality Filament Dryer Summary Comparison Table Here’s a comparative overview of Creality’s filament-drying products — what they are, how they differ, and which workflows each one suits best. I’ll focus on these models:

It’s a no-frills, effective tool for hobbyists.

Key attributes ：

Designed as a single-chamber dryer/storage box for one spool. Uses 360° airflow and precise humidity control to remove moisture. Temperature typically stays in the moderate range (about 45–65 °C), suitable for standard filaments. Displays real-time humidity and a countdown timer. Who it’s for :

It uses a more traditional "clamshell" design. Hobbyists and casual users who need basic drying and storage without advanced controls or multi-spool capability. It’s compact and budget-friendly, ideal if you print exclusively with PLA or PETG.

Space Pi Filament Dryer – One-Spool Dryer The original Space Pi Filament Dryer steps up from the Dry Box with more control and performance.

Key attributes ：

Can handle one spool at a time with adjustable drying time and temperature. 360° PTC hot-air heating and real-time humidity monitoring improve dryness uniformity. Suitable for common materials like PLA, ABS, PETG, and more. Who it’s for :

Users who want precise control over drying conditions and a dedicated dryer that’s a step above simple storage boxes. Like the Plus, it reaches 70°C. It is much faster and more uniform than the older "pizza box" style dryers thanks to the PTC heater and internal fan.

Space Pi Filament Dryer Plus – Dual Filament Support If you frequently swap between two colors or run a dual-extruder setup, the Space Pi Plus is the middle ground.

Key attributes ：

Holds two spools of filament simultaneously. Dual PTC 360° hot-air heating ensures consistent drying across both spools. Adjustable temperature and humidity display help tailor the drying process. Who it’s for :

Makers with multiple printers or dual-material setups who want to dry two filaments at once without jumping to the larger multi-spool systems. Standard materials like PLA, PETG, TPU, and ABS. It’s essentially a "double-wide" version of the original Space Pi.

SpacePi X4 – Full-Featured Multi-Spool Dryer The SpacePi X4 is the current flagship of Creality’s drying line. It is designed for power users, print farms, and those using engineering-grade materials.

Key attributes ：

Four-spool capacity with dual independent heating chambers. Higher top temperatures (up to ~85 °C), allowing effective drying of technical and hygroscopic filaments like nylon or PC. More advanced features such as active dehumidification and real-time humidity control. Can function in single-chamber or dual-chamber modes for energy savings. Who it’s for :

Frequent makers, professionals, or anyone who works regularly with a variety of materials and needs reliable drying performance for multiple spools at once. You can dry two spools at 50°C (PLA) while drying another two at 80°C (Nylon) simultaneously.

SpacePi X4L – Lite Multi-Spool Solution The "Lite" version of the X4 is built for those who need the capacity but perhaps not the extreme thermal range or dual-zone complexity.

Key attributes ：

Dry up to four spools in two independent chambers. Each chamber has its own PTC heater, and you can dry different materials concurrently. Maximum drying temperature of about 75 °C and responsive digital display. Chamber insulation and humidity sensors help keep filaments in optimal condition. Who it’s for :

Intermediate users who want multi-spool drying but don’t need the full feature set (like the highest temperature or advanced UI) of the top-tier model. It loses some of the "smart" features like desiccant regeneration and independent chamber control to offer a more budget-friendly 4-spool solution.

Bonus: Heavy-Duty Drying vs. Mass Storage While the Space Pi series is the gold standard for active drying during a print, Creality offers two other specialized solutions for users with massive inventories: the Multi-kilo Filament Dryer and the Filament Storage Box .

Creality Multi-kilo Filament Dryer Unlike the Space Pi’s 1kg spool limit, the Multi-kilo Dryer is a beast designed for large-scale projects. It accommodates oversized spools ranging from 1kg up to 5kg . It features a powerful 400W PTC heater —nearly triple the power of the standard Space Pi—allowing it to reach 70°C in just 5 minutes.

Its standout feature is its modular design : the heating unit is detachable and can be repurposed as a chamber heater for your 3D printer enclosure. If you use industrial-sized spools or need a multi-purpose heating tool, this is your choice.

Creality Filament Storage Box The Filament Storage Box is not a heated dryer; it is a high-capacity organization system. While a Space Pi box sits next to your printer, this storage unit is designed to hold up to 10 rolls of filament (or resin containers) in a single, tidy rack.

It uses a sealed, moisture-proof design with a magnetic door and Oxford cloth to protect your collection from dust and humidity.

Faqs about Filament Dryer 1. Why do I need a filament dryer for new spools? Even vacuum-sealed spools can contain factory moisture or experience micro-leaks during shipping. Using a filament dryer ensures your material is in peak condition, eliminating moisture-related defects right from the first layer of your print.

2. Can I print directly from a filament dryer? Yes. Most modern filament dryers, including the Space Pi series, are designed to allow printing while drying. This is especially helpful for long prints, as the filament continues to stay dry throughout the entire printing process.

3. How do I know if my filament needs drying? Listen for "popping" sounds at the nozzle or look for excessive stringing and bubbles. If your filament has become brittle or shows poor surface quality, a cycle in a filament dryer will usually restore its performance.

4. What is the difference between a filament dryer and a filament storage box? A filament dryer actively removes moisture using heat and airflow, while a filament storage box only prevents additional moisture absorption. If filament is already wet, a storage box alone cannot fix it—you need a filament dryer to restore print performance.

5. Which filament dryer is best for nylon and PC filaments? For nylon, PC, and other highly hygroscopic materials, a filament dryer that can reach higher temperatures is recommended. Models like the SpacePi X4, with up to 85°C and active dehumidification, are better suited for these engineering-grade filaments.

Final Verdict Go for the SpacePi X4 if you print with Nylon or PC, or if you have a multi-filament system like the Creality CFS.

Go for the Space Pi (Single/Plus) if you want a premium experience with easy touch presets for your everyday PLA and PETG.

Choosing the right filament dryer depends on your printing needs and workspace. From the compact Filament Dry Box 2.0 to the high-capacity SpacePi X4L, each option offers reliable moisture control.
