Raptor Pro vs Sermoon S1: Creality 3D Scanner Comparison

A new 3D-scanner owner recently put a very understandable question to the r/3DScanning community: So what’s the main difference between the Raptor Pro vs the Sermoon S1 ? Did I just screw myself with a pro? The user was pleased with the detail captured by the Raptor Pro, particularly for modifying scans in Blender, but the arrival of the Sermoon S1 made the product differences difficult to untangle. Read and know more the original discussion on Reddit’s 3D Scanning community .

The short answer is no : buying a Raptor Pro was not automatically the wrong decision.

Both scanners combine blue-laser and infrared scanning; Both reach a specified laser accuracy of up to 0.02 mm; Both can handle detailed reverse-engineering work. The Sermoon S1 is the more versatile system, adding a single blue laser line, 34 cross laser lines and an expanded four-lens NIR setup. Those additions matter most for deep holes, narrow recesses, faster coverage and medium-to-large objects. If your priority is detailed parts rather than those broader workflows, the Raptor Pro remains a capable and more accessible option.

Real scan quality and speed also depend on surface reflectivity, lighting, markers, working distance, computer performance and operator technique.

Raptor Pro: detailed scanning without unnecessary complexity The Creality Raptor Pro uses two blue-laser patterns. 7 parallel lines prioritise fine detail, while 22 cross lines cover a larger area and accelerate scanning. Its binocular NIR mode provides marker-free acquisition for larger or more recognisable surfaces.

Its stated laser accuracy and volumetric accuracy match the headline laser figures of the Sermoon S1. This is important for the Reddit question: S1 does not make a good Raptor Pro scan suddenly inaccurate. For car parts, RC components, mechanical details, sculptures and objects being rebuilt or modified in Blender or CAD, Raptor Pro can still capture the geometry needed for a productive reverse-engineering workflow.

The limitation is versatility rather than basic precision. Raptor Pro has no dedicated single-line mode for deep recesses, uses fewer cross laser lines and has a smaller maximum capture area. Scanning a large panel or full vehicle therefore requires more passes and careful tracking than with the S1.

Sermoon S1: more modes for difficult geometry and larger subjects The Creality Sermoon S1 expands the hybrid-light concept with four principal workflows: a single blue laser line, seven parallel lines, 34 cross lines, and close- or long-range NIR structured light.

The single line is the clearest functional difference. A narrower projected pattern can reach into deep holes, grooves and recessed areas that are difficult to expose evenly with a multi-line grid. The 34-cross-line mode covers more surface per pass, while the larger laser field of view makes medium and large parts faster to acquire.

S1 also uses a four-lens NIR configuration that combines precision cameras with wide-angle cameras. Close-range NIR supports more controlled geometry capture, while the long-range field of view is designed for large objects and human-body scanning. This broader coverage is the main reason to choose S1 when one device must move regularly between small components, automotive panels, people and complete large objects.

Accuracy: the same headline figure does not mean the same workflow Both scanners specify laser accuracy up to 0.02 mm and laser volumetric accuracy of 0.02 mm + 0.08 mm/m. The practical difference is how quickly and reliably each scanner can maintain coverage on the object in front of it.

For a small mechanical part with visible markers and accessible surfaces, the Raptor Pro can be the rational choice. For a component containing deep bores, narrow gaps and broad panels, the S1 provides modes better matched to each section. It may reduce the need to reposition the part or reconstruct missing recesses later, but it does not remove the need for calibration, stable movement and appropriate marker placement.

Laser scanning or NIR: which mode matters for your work? Use blue laser for: small details, mechanical parts, dark or metallic surfaces, reverse engineering and high-accuracy geometry. Reflective markers are normally part of this workflow. Use NIR for: faces, bodies, sculptures and medium-to-large objects with enough geometric or textural features for tracking. NIR can reduce marker use, but its stated accuracy is lower than laser mode. Choose S1’s single line for: deep holes, slots, narrow gaps and recessed details where line-of-sight is the main challenge. Choose a wider cross-line pattern for: larger surfaces where acquisition speed and tracking coverage matter more than concentrating on one tiny feature. If you are also considering another Raptor-series model, the Raptor Pro vs RaptorX comparison explains how wireless operation, light patterns and portability differ within that range.

Computer requirements and scanning software High scan rates create large point clouds, so the computer is part of the scanning system. For demanding Windows workflows, Creality recommends a modern Core i7-class processor, a compatible NVIDIA GPU with sufficient VRAM and 32 GB of memory; lower configurations may run the software but can reduce preview smoothness and processing speed. Supported Apple-silicon Macs require adequate unified memory.

Check the current operating-system, GPU and mobile-accessory details in the Creality 3D scanner compatibility and system requirements guide before purchasing. Wireless and mobile operation require compatible accessories and should not be assumed from desktop support alone.

Raptor Pro vs Sermoon S1: Which one should you choose? Your main requirement Better fit Why Detailed parts and reverse engineering Raptor Pro Up to 0.02 mm laser accuracy with parallel and cross-line modes at a lower product tier. Deep holes, recesses and narrow gaps Sermoon S1 The dedicated single blue laser line is designed for hard-to-reach geometry. Frequent medium-to-large object scanning Sermoon S1 Larger fields of view, 34 cross lines and long-range NIR improve coverage efficiency. Hobby and occasional professional work Raptor Pro Strong detail capture without paying for modes you may rarely use. One scanner for varied professional projects Sermoon S1 Its wider set of optical modes covers more object sizes and surface geometries. Final verdict Choose Raptor Pro when your work centres on detailed accessible parts, reverse engineering and high-resolution geometry, and when you want to control the investment. Choose Sermoon S1 when deep features, larger capture areas, faster coverage and switching between small parts, people and large objects are routine requirements.

For the Reddit owner who already enjoys the Raptor Pro and does not need faster large-area scanning, there is little reason to regret the purchase. The S1 is a broader tool, not proof that the Raptor Pro has stopped being useful. If neither profile fully matches your work, use the wider Creality 3D scanner comparison to compare the rest of the range before deciding.
