1. Tighten the Screws

Check and tighten all screws on your Ender 3 printer to ensure stable and accurate printing. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Tighten the Screws:

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Before starting, ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.
  2. Gather Tools: You will need an appropriate hex wrench or screwdriver, usually included with your printer.
  3. Check Frame Screws: Inspect all screws on the printer frame.Tighten any loose screws, especially those securing the frame and the base.
  4. Hotend and Printhead: Ensure all screws on the hotend assembly and printhead are tight. This prevents wobbling during printing.
  5. Bed Screws: Check screws under the print bed. Tighten them to ensure the bed stays level.
  6. Examine Extruder: Tighten screws on the extruder assembly to maintain consistent filament feeding.
  7. Look for Missing Screws: Occasionally, a screw might be missing. Replace any missing screws to maintain printer integrity.

Tips:

Don't Overtighten: Tighten screws firmly but avoid overtightening, which could strip the threads or damage the components.

Regular Maintenance: Make this part of your regular maintenance routine to prevent future issues.

2. Level the Bed

Leveling the bed is crucial for achieving high-quality prints on your Ender 3 printer, ensuring that the first layer adheres well without being too close or too far from the nozzle. Follow these steps to level the bed accurately:

Steps to Level the Bed:

  1. Heat the Bed and Nozzle: Preheat the bed and the nozzle as they expand slightly when heated. Go to "Control" -> "Temperature", set the bed temperature to around 60°C and the nozzle to around 200°C.
  2. Home All Axes: From the printer menu, navigate to “Prepare” -> “Auto Home” (or "Motion" -> "Auto Home" for some models like the Ender 3 Pro). This moves the print head to the front-left corner.
  3. Disable Steppers: Disable the motors to move the print head and bed freely. Go to “Prepare” -> “Disable Steppers”.
  4. Use a Piece of Paper: Place a regular piece of paper (like printer paper) on the bed. Move the print head to one of the four corners.
  5. Adjust the Bed Leveling Knobs: Slowly turn the bed leveling knob under the corner until you feel a slight friction when sliding the paper back and forth under the nozzle. Ensure the paper moves with some resistance but isn’t getting stuck or moving too freely.
  6. Repeat for All Corners: Move the print head to the remaining three corners and adjust the leveling knobs there as well. It’s often necessary to go around the bed more than once to ensure consistent leveling.
  7. Check Center: After leveling the four corners, move the print head to the center of the bed and perform the same paper test to ensure the center is correctly leveled.

Tips:

Recheck Often: Regular use and changes in temperature can cause the bed to become unlevel. Check it periodically.

Use Leveling Aides: Consider using bed leveling aids like leveling prints or a BLTouch sensor for more precise automated leveling.

3. Assisted & Automated Bed Leveling

To simplify the bed leveling process, you can use assisted methods like leveling scripts or invest in automated solutions like a BLTouch sensor. Here’s how you can enhance your leveling experience:

Assisted Bed Leveling

Use Leveling Scripts:

  • Leveling scripts consist of G-code commands that move the print head to specific points on the bed, making it easier to adjust the knobs without moving the head manually.
  • Download a leveling script specifically designed for the Ender 3 from popular sites like Thingiverse or through the 3D printing community forums.
  • Load the script onto your SD card and run it like a regular print job. The script will automatically move the print head to each corner and the center, pausing at each point to allow you to manually adjust the bed leveling knobs.

Automated Bed Leveling

Install an ABL Sensor (BLTouch or CR Touch):

  • Choose a Sensor: The BLTouch and Creality’s CR Touch are popular options that provide accurate bed leveling.
  • Mount the Sensor: Follow the specific mounting instructions for your chosen sensor. Usually, it involves attaching the sensor to the print head using brackets included in the sensor kit.
  • Connect to the Mainboard: Attach the sensor wiring to the mainboard. This often involves connecting to the Z-axis endstop pins.
  • Firmware Update: Update your printer's firmware to support the ABL sensor. You can find updated firmware on the Creality website or source it from community firmware providers like Marlin.

Sensor Calibration:

  • After installation and firmware update, perform the initial setup and calibration. Go to “Prepare” -> “Auto Home” and then select the bed leveling option in the menu.
  • The sensor will probe the bed at multiple points to create a mesh map of the surface.
  • Once the mesh is created, the sensor will automatically adjust the nozzle height during printing to account for any bed unevenness.

Tips:

Firmware and Software: Ensure you have the latest firmware and software to support the ABL sensor.

Documentation: Follow the detailed installation and calibration guides provided with your sensor for the best results.

4. Calibrate the Extruder

Calibrating the extruder's E-steps on your Ender 3 is crucial to ensure accurate filament extrusion, which directly affects print quality. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Calibrate the Extruder:

  1. Prepare the Printer: Preheat the nozzle to the usual printing temperature (around 200°C for PLA).Ensure you have filament loaded into the extruder.
  2. Measure and Mark: Measure and mark 100 mm from a fixed point on the extruder inlet using a ruler. This will be your reference mark to measure filament extrusion.
  3. Extrude Filament: On the printer's control panel, go to "Prepare" -> "Move Axis" -> "Extruder" and extrude 100 mm of filament at a slow speed to avoid skipping steps.
  4. Measure Actual Extrusion: After the extruder has pushed the filament, measure the distance from the fixed point on the extruder to the mark on the filament.Calculate the difference between the expected 100 mm and the actual extruded length. If it’s exactly 100 mm, your extruder is correctly calibrated.
  5. Calculate New E-steps: ew E-steps = (Current E-steps * 100) / Actual Extruded Length.View and note the current E-steps value by going to "Control" -> "Motion" -> "Steps/mm" -> "E-steps". Calculate the new E-step value using the formula above.
  6. Set the New E-steps: Return to "Control" -> "Motion" -> "Steps/mm" -> "E-steps" and enter the new value. Save the new settings by selecting "Control" -> "Store Settings".

Example Calculation:

Current E-steps: 93 steps/mm

Actual Extruded Length: 95 mm

New E-steps = (93 * 100) / 95 ≈ 97.89 steps/mm

Tips:

Repeat the Process: You may need to repeat the process to ensure accuracy.

Consistency: Perform calibration checks regularly to maintain accurate extrusion.

5. Tighten the Belts

Loose belts can cause print quality issues like ghosting and layer shifting. Tightening the belts on your Ender 3 ensures smoother and more accurate printing.

Steps to Tighten the Belts:

  1. Locate Adjustment Points: For the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro, find the screws on the bracket holding the bearings at the end of the X-axis belt (near the print head).
  2. Check Belt Tension: Press down lightly on the belts with your finger. They should feel taut, with minimal give or slack. Loose belts will wobble or sag.

Tightening the X-Axis Belt:

  1. Locate Adjustment Points: For the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro, find the screws on the bracket holding the bearings at the end of the X-axis belt (near the print head). For the Ender 3 V2, use the built-in tensioner located at the end of the X-axis.
  2. Adjust Tension: Ender 3/Pro: Loosen the screws on the bracket. Pull the bracket outward to increase tension and then re-tighten the screws. Ender 3 V2: Turn the tensioner knob to increase belt tension.

Tightening the Y-Axis Belt:

  1. Locate Adjustment Points: For the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro, find the screws on the bracket holding the bearings at the end of the Y-axis belt (under the print bed, at the front or back). For the Ender 3 V2, use the built-in tensioner knob at the end of the Y-axis.
  2. Adjust Tension: Ender 3/Pro: Loosen the screws on the bracket. Pull the bracket outward to increase tension and then re-tighten the screws.Ender 3 V2: Turn the tensioner knob to increase belt tension.

Check Tension Again:

After adjusting, press down on the belts again to check tension. They should feel firm but not overly tight.

Tips:

Even Tension: Ensure the tension is even across the belt to avoid uneven movement.

Regular Inspection: Regularly inspect belt tension as part of your maintenance routine, especially after moving the printer.

6. Adjust the Eccentric Nuts

Eccentric nuts on your Ender 3 control the tightness of the wheels that run along the frame. Proper adjustment of these nuts ensures smooth movement of the print head and bed.

Steps to Adjust the Eccentric Nuts:

  1. Locate the Eccentric Nuts: X-axis: Under the X carriage, which moves the print head left and right. Y-axis: Under the print bed, controlling the bed's forward and backward movement. Z-axis: On the vertical frame, affecting the upward and downward movement of the print head.
  2. Tools Needed: A suitable wrench (usually included with your Ender 3 kit).

Adjusting the Eccentric Nuts:

  1. Ensure Free Movement: Before adjusting, make sure the printer is turned off and the motors are disengaged.
  2. X-axis Adjustment: Locate the eccentric nut on the bottom V-wheels of the X carriage. Using the wrench, turn the eccentric nut slightly. Tighten to reduce play and loosen if the wheels are overly tight. The wheels should rotate smoothly without wobbling or slipping along the profile.
  3. Y-axis Adjustment: Locate the eccentric nut on the V-wheels under the print bed. Similarly, adjust the nut to ensure the bed moves smoothly but doesn’t wobble. Check that the bed can move back and forth with minimal resistance.
  4. Z-axis Adjustment: Locate the eccentric nut on the V-wheels that run up and down the vertical frame. Adjust the nut to eliminate any wobble while ensuring smooth vertical movement. Also, make sure the Z-axis rod is correctly seated and moves freely.

Tips:

Small Adjustments: Make small adjustments and test the movement each time to find the optimal tightness.

Balanced Tension: The wheels should be tight enough to avoid wobbling but not so tight that they hinder smooth movement or cause unnecessary strain on the components.

Regular Inspection: Regularly check and adjust the eccentric nuts as part of your maintenance routine to maintain print quality.
