Ender 3 Direct Drive Upgrade: Boost Your 3D Printer's Performance

Creality’s Ender 3, Ender 3 Pro, and Ender 3 V2 are well-regarded for their affordability and quality, but they often suffer from filament extrusion issues due to Bowden extruders. Upgrading to an Ender 3 direct drive extruder significantly improves control and reliability, particularly with flexible materials. Make sure you have all the necessary materials before starting the installation steps.

What is Ender 3 Direct Drive? Simply put, a direct drive system mounts the extruder directly on the hotend. This reduces the filament path length between the extruder and the nozzle. By adopting an Ender 3 direct drive configuration, the filament control is more precise, perfect for printing flexible materials like TPU, as well as minimizing stringing and oozing issues often encountered with a stock setup.

Tools & Parts Needed - Set of Allen keys

- Two-sided wrench

- Longer stepper motor cable (purchased)

- Motor bracket (3D printed)

Various kits exist for converting the Ender 3 (Pro and V2) to a direct drive system. Notable options include kits from Micro-Swiss (~$40) and Creality (~$100). Be aware that some kits may only work with specific printer versions due to differences, such as the V2's unique X-axis carriage.

This guide demonstrates a budget-friendly setup costing just a few dollars, requiring minimal purchases, a 3D printed part, and standard tools that come with the Ender 3.

Ensure the cable you purchase has a compatible wiring configuration with your setup. A safe length to target is 45-60 cm. Print the motor bracket with durable filament like PLA, with settings of 0.2 mm layer height and 40% infill density. Supports and a brim are recommended for added structure.

Ender 3(V2/Pro) Direct Drive Upgrade Step-by-Step Guide Prepare your 3D printer by turning it off and unloading any filament:

Disconnect the extruder wire from the extruder, but leave it connected to the mainboard. Remove the PTFE tube and the PTFE couplers from both the feeder end and the hotend. Unscrew the extruder feeder system from the motor and bracket. Hold the motor to prevent it from falling. With a small Allen key, unscrew the fan shroud and any sensors like BLTouch. If you have the Ender 3 V2, remove the single fan shroud screw. Use a larger Allen key and wrench to unscrew the two eccentric nuts that roll the X-axis carriage. Remove the bearings, nuts, and spacers. Attach the 3D printed bracket to the X-axis carriage by pushing it into place. Reinstall the screws and eccentric nuts, excluding the spacers. Detach the hot end from the carriage and screw the PTFE coupler onto one end. Mount the motor with the cable port facing up into the 3D printed bracket. Attach the feeder system to the bracket with screws. Screw the PTFE coupler onto the motor (feeder) end. Replace the stepper motor cable for the extruder with your new, longer cable by accessing the motherboard. Connect the new cable to the extruder. Insert a 10-cm piece of PTFE tube between the feeder system coupler and the bottom of the hot end. Trim as necessary for the correct length. Reattach the hot end to the X-axis carriage with the PTFE tube in place. Reconnect the fan shroud and any sensors on top of it. Initial Adjustments & Troubleshooting Once installed, check and tweak the following:

Eccentric nuts: Ensure the X-axis carriage rolls smoothly without being too loose. Retraction settings: Adjust retraction to around 1 mm and speed to about 27 mm/s. Fine-tune as needed. Hot end fan: Ensure it is always on to prevent melting the 3D printed parts. Print speed: Lower print speed if necessary to maintain quality due to additional weight. Recommended reading:
